Data breach affects 6,800+ at Illinois orthopedic practice

Midwest Orthopaedic Consultants, which has locations in Oak Lawn and Orland Park, Ill., experienced a data breach affecting 6,818 individuals, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The practice submitted notice of the data breach Dec. 22, according to HHS. According to a notification from MOC, staff learned on Sept. 29 that an unauthorized party may have gained access to the practice’s computer systems. During an investigation, the practice learned a third party obtained documents containing personal information that may include names, Social Security numbers, medical diagnosis information and health insurance information.

On Dec. 22, MOC notified those who were affected. The practice has restored its files from backups and notified law enforcement about the breach.
