Mr. Cox broke his leg and injured his ankle during a November 2014 game, and Dr. Lorich operated on him. The surgery failed to repair the running back’s ankle, and Mr. Cox’s football career ended.
The verdict included $15.5 million for future pain, $12 million in lost earnings and $1 million for past pain and suffering, the report said.
Dr. Lorich died a year after the lawsuit was filed.
Hospital for Special Surgery plans to appeal the decision, a spokesperson said in a Sept. 28 email to Becker’s. The spokesperson described the verdict as “inconsistent with the evidence in the case.”
