Study: Electronic Conductivity Devices Helpful During Surgical Scoliosis Correction

Using an electronic conductivity device can reduce the incidence of clinically relevant misplaced screws in several scoliosis patients, according to a report published in Spine.

Researchers examined 248 pediatric scoliosis patients who either had procedures with or without ECD. There were 1,270 pedicle screw placements analyzed among the patients where ECD was used and 1,400 pedicel screw placements among patients where ECD wasn’t used.

In the 10 procedures where ECD wasn’t used, a neuromonitoring alarm concomitant with screw placement occurred, as compared with three procedures in the ECD group. The ECD also helped to reduce the instances of neurophysiologic alarms.
