1. In March, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary DePuy Synthes was ordered to pay Gary Lynn Rasmussen, MD, $20 million after one of its products was found to infringe on one of the orthopedic surgeon’s patents.
2. In January, the Massachusetts appeals court upheld a verdict in favor of Leslie Stern, MD, PhD, who was accused of botching a woman’s spine surgery in 2010.
3. In August 2021, a jury awarded Wade McKenna, DO, $7.8 million after his business partner locked him out of a stem cell clinic they jointly owned and siphoned off assets to a competing clinic established at the same site.
4. In April 2019, a jury awarded Mark Linskey, MD, $2 million in his retaliation case against the University of California Irvine.
5. In November 2018, Carmel-based Indiana Spine Group President Rick Sasso, MD, was awarded $112 million in damages after winning a five-year legal battle against Medtronic, in which he accused the medical device company of failing to pay him royalties he was contractually owed.
6. In June 2017, Medtronic was ordered to pay Mark Barry, MD, $23.5 million for infringing on two of the spine surgeon’s spine device patents.
7. In June 2017, a jury awarded Nicholas Angelopoulos, MD, about $2 million in favor of his breach of contract and fraud case against Keystone Orthopedic Specialists in Hazel Crest, Ill.
