Mr. Bernal underwent procedures Jan. 24 at Clinica Universidad de La Sabana in Cundinamarca, Colombia, to repair a fractured femur and kneecap. He also suffered a collapsed lung.
The spine surgery “kept intact the neurological integrity and conserved the functionality of the segments involved,” the hospital stated.
Neurosurgeons performed “a reduction of a displaced fracture from the T5 [vertebra] to the T6 [vertebra] with a traumatic herniated disc. Under constant monitoring for nervous system activity, a tool was put in place from the T3 to T8,” according to the hospital’s statement.
The Ineos Grenadiers, Mr. Bernal’s cycling team, said he was conscious when he arrived at the hospital. He is stable and undergoing further assessment.
