Dr. Stone invented the device after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. The device harnesses the user in place and clips to the side of something sturdy inside the building. The users can lower themselves to the ground using strong Kevlar line from buildings up to 100 stories high.

Kevin Stone, MD, an orthopedic surgeon practicing in San Francisco, invented a device called the Rescue Reel, designed to help people escape from tall buildings, which is now being manufactured in Indiana, according to a WIBC news report.
