Orthopedic & Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Leon Benson of Illinois Bone & Joint Institute

Leon Benson, MD, is a hand surgeon and member of the board of directors at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute and chief of hand surgery in the department of orthopedic surgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem. He is also the president of professional staff at NorthShore University HealthSystem and an associate editor of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

Among his many clinical and leadership responsibilities, Dr. Benson has served as the vice chairman of the communications cabinet of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and as vice president of the Illinois Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has also served as a media spokesperson for AAOS and is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Benson’s research accolades also extend far beyond his practice in Illinois. He has published professional articles on issues and topics in hand surgery, such as vascular disorders and trigger finger in national journals. He has earned several awards for his work from professional organizations and is a graduate of the AAOS’ Leadership Fellows Program.

Dr. Benson earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. His additional training includes a hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship at Harvard University in Boston.
