Peter Mitchell, MD, performed ankle surgery on Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew to repair torn ligaments Mr. Drew sustained during while sliding into home plate. The procedure included internal plating to the fibula bone and repairing the torn ligaments.
New York Giants team physician Russell Warren, MD, performed knee surgery on defensive end Osi Umenyiora after his knee began to swell during practice. He is scheduled for rehabilitation and expected to return to play this season.
Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinc’s Lewis Yocum, MD, is scheduled to perform elbow surgery on Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jose Contreras. The elbow injury stems back from pain Mr. Contreras experienced in April, and he isn’t scheduled to return to the mound until next season.
Dr. Yocum also performed surgery on Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. He will spend two months recovering before returning to activity and may be able to return to play by next spring.
