Dr. Mathis is a Birmingham-based orthopedic surgeon who has served in leadership roles for several organizations, including CMO at Allscripts, senior medical director at Smith+Nephew. Currently, he is a consultant and physician reviewer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.

“Though the worst of the pandemic is behind us, Alabama’s healthcare system continues to face challenges,” Dr. Mathis told APR. “I am convinced that conservative policy solutions give us the best chance at overcoming these challenges and enabling our healthcare system to meet our state’s ever-changing needs.”

Dr. Mathis’ role at HHS was to develop protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes and ensure high-quality care through regulatory reform, according to the report.
