Vancouver Canucks player Adam Gaudette tested positive March 30 for the COVID-19 variant and within the next eight days 20 other players and four coaches tested positive. The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control is conducting genome sequencing to identify the variant.
The Vancouver Coastal Health investigation found a single individual picked up the infection from community spread and sparked the outbreak. The NHL has not said whether any of the players or coaches broke league protocol.
“This is a stark reminder of how quickly the virus can spread and its serious impact, even among healthy, young athletes,” the team said in a statement.
