For the first surgery, which took place Jan. 27, medical device company Arthrex created a custom hip implant using a CT scan of the tiger. But the implant dislodged after surgery.

Dr. Cook performed a revision surgery Jan. 30, which removed the arthritic head and neck of the femur to allow the leg muscles to form a functional joint in place of the deteriorated original, according to the report.
