Three things to know:

1. Also known as the Intracept System, the procedure targets vertebrogenic pain from degenerative changes at the disc endplate junction for chronic axial back pain when less invasive options, such as epidural steroid injections and facet procedures, have failed.

2. The procedure can be used as an alternative to lumbar fusion for painful, but stable lumbar motion segments in the absence of radicular symptoms.

3. James Chappuis, MD, a revision spine specialist, is owner and senior orthopedic spine surgeon at Spine Center Atlanta, which recently opened its fifth location.
