Keith Hughes, MD, of Nebraska Foot and Ankle in Lincoln, allegedly wrote 63 prescriptions for 4,300 oxycodone pills to the patient over the past two years.
Prosecutors believe the patient sold most of the opioids back to Dr. Hughes after picking them up from a pharmacy.
Dr. Hughes and the patient were arrested in separate traffic stops July 14, with investigators finding 63 pills without a prescription in the surgeon’s car. He was charged with possession of narcotics with intent to deliver.
Six pills and a pistol were found in the patient’s car. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during a drug offense.
Dr. Hughes’ bond was set at $50,000 and he posted bail July 15.
