Researchers examined 15 patients with spinal musculoatrophy and scoliosis who were treated using growing rods. The primary radiographic measurements showed improvement from preoperative time to the follow-up in curve angle, pelvic obliquity, space available for lung ratio and TS-S1 length.
However, rib collapse continued after treatment with growth rod in SMA, but not with infantile and juvenile idiopathic scoliosis patients. The hospital length of stay was also longer for patients with SMA.
