Illinois neurosurgeon 1st in state to offer new tumor therapy — 3 things to know

Julian Bailes, MD, of Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem is reportedly the first neurosurgeon in the state to offer GammaTile Therapy to treat malignant brain tumors, reports EurekAlert!

Three things to know:

1. The surgically targeted radiation therapy aims to delay tumor regrowth for patients with gliomas, meningiomas and brain metastases.

2. Dr. Bailes is chairman of the department of neurosurgery and co-director of the NorthShore Neurological Institute.

3. He is also medical director of the Center for Study of Retired Athletes at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. For 22 years, he has served as a sideline physician at the NFL or NCAA levels, according to his website.
