The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air was designated as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement and the University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace was named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement.
The distinctions are part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, which recognizes facilities that provide improved patient safety and outcomes based on a set of objective measures.
Hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers+ are on average 20 percent more cost-efficient in an episode of care compared to other hospitals.
Knee and hip replacements are among the fastest growing procedures in the country, according to a 2014 study in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. In 2011, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported that there were 645,062 typical hip replacements and 306,600 typical knee replacements performed in the U.S., according to Medical Apparatus.
