He will receive the award at the AOSSM annual meeting next month. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Bergfeld has arranged for athletic trainers and physicians to attend various Cleveland Metropolitan School District athletic events. He also developed and hosts the Athletic Champions Recognition Dinner to recognize outstanding teams and athletes in the area. The ceremony also includes scholarship presentations endowed by Dr. Bergfeld and his wife, Wilma Bergfeld, MD.
Dr. Bergfeld spent a combined 48 seasons as head team physician for the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers. He previously received the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Lifetime Achievement Award and the Mr. Sports Medicine award from AOSSM. He has served as president of the organization and was elected to the Hall of Fame.
