Four things to know:

1. Dr. Houle performed the outpatient surgery with the joimax endoscopic devices to treat patients suffering from a herniated disc.

2. Joimax procedures involve the neurosurgeon entering the spine through the neuroforamen using an endoscope and removing the disc portion that is pinching the nerves.

3. Patients receive medication to relax them during the surgery instead of a general anesthetic, which contributes to a quicker recovery time.

4. Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass., and Falmouth (Mass.) Hospital offer the new procedure.
