A retrospective review of the clinical and radiographic outcomes and return to sport rate in 21 elite athletes undergoing treatment of Jones fracture re-fractures or non-unions was used in this study. The athletes underwent intramedullary screw fixation with autologous bone graft, bone-marrow aspirate and de-mineralized bone matrix or treatment without a bone graft.

All athletes returned to their previous level of athletic competition at an average of 12.3 weeks. Every athlete showed clinical and radiographic evidence of fracture healing, and only one patient had a subsequent re-fracture.
