Five things to know:
1. Dr. Black, an orthopedic surgeon, will replace Craig Hillemeier, MD, on July 1, when Dr. Hillemeier retires as dean of the college and senior vice president for health affairs. Dr. Hillimeier is also the CEO of Penn State Health.
2. While Dr. Black temporarily fills in for Dr. Hillemeier, the university will conduct a search for a permanent dean for the College of Medicine.
3. Dr. Black is the vice dean of the College of Medicine’s University Park Regional Medical Campus and C. McCollister Evarts Chair and professor in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation.
4. After Dr. Black became the chair of orthopedics and rehabilitation at Penn State in 2002, the department increased four-fold and doubled the size of its residency program. He also oversaw the establishment of the Center for Orthopaedic Research and Translational Science.
5. In his current role, Dr. Black was responsible for establishing the four-year curriculum for students at the University Park regional campus and created a joint family medicine residency program in partnership with Mount Nittany Health in State College, Pa.
