Women encouraged to pursue orthopedic surgery, engineering paths at Nevada workshop: 3 insights

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Reno Orthopedic Clinic Foundation and The Perry Initiative co-hosted orthopedic surgery and engineering workshops for young women Nov. 9 and 10, according to Fox 11.

Here are three things to know:

1. Local female surgeons and engineers conducted mock surgery sessions and lectures for current medical and high school students.

2. According to The Perry Initiative, a national organization dedicated to encouraging young women to pursue medical and engineering careers, only 6.1 percent of fully-accredited practicing orthopedic surgeons were women in 2014.

3. In 2014, only 12.4 percent of engineering school faculty were women.
