Dr. Black was a board-certified neurosurgeon. He served as the head of Philadelphia-based Drexel University College of Medicine’s neurosurgery department, formerly known as Hahnemann University, for 15 years.
He received his medical degree from Montreal, Canada-based McGill University Faculty of Medicine and trained in neurosurgery at Baltimore-based The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he became an associate professor and director of the Child Head Injury Project.
At Hahnemann, Dr. Black organized programs for pain treatment and malignant brain tumor management. He was recognized with the Volvo Award of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies for his spinal cord injury research. Dr. Black served as an associate editor of Neurosurgery and president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society.
