Illinois hospital 1st in tri-state area to use robotic spine surgery: 3 details

New Lenox, Ill.-based Silver Cross Hospital was the first facility in the state and the tri-state area to implement robotic spine surgery, according to The Herald News.

Here are three things to know:

1. Silver Cross’ Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery installed Globus Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS system.

2. Designed to enhance instrument positioning and screw placement, the navigation system is comprised of a robotic arm to assist with spinal fusion surgeries.

3. Chintan Sampat, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Silver Cross, said patients experience less pain, scarring, blood loss and radiation exposure when undergoing surgery with the robotic system.
