Here are four things to know:
1. Each year, more than 1 million Americans undergo meniscal surgery, making it one of the most common orthopedic procedures performed in the U.S. These patients often develop joint osteoarthritis.
2. Researchers will take samples of synovial fluid from 28 patients ages 18 to 45 who are undergoing a partial meniscectomy. The samples will be screened for inflammatory molecules, and the researchers will use MRI to track meniscal healing over time.
3. The study aims to develop a biomarker panel to help surgeons determine which patients are most likely to benefit from particular meniscal procedures, and what kind of rehabilitation or prehabilitation routine they should undergo.
4. The study is currently enrolling participants.
