Inaugural event at Emory Sports Medicine Complex celebrates Dr. James Roberson — 6 insights

Emory Sports Medicine Complex in Atlanta hosted its first event, honoring James Roberson, MD, Feb. 3, who is resigning.

Here’s what you should know:

 

1. Dr. Roberson is stepping down as Atlanta-based Emory University’s department of orthopedics chair after 15 years of service.

 

2. Emory leaders, faculty members as well as friends and family were all present to honor Dr. Roberson.

 

3. Emory University School of Medicine Dean Vikas Sukhatme said, “It’s very clear from the moment you walk into a room — you sense [Dr. Roberson’s] presence, his command of the situation and the thoughtfulness that goes behind the comments that he makes.”

 

4. During Dr. Roberson’s tenure, he helped create Emory Orthopedics and Spine Center in Executive Park, in Atlanta, the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital in Tucker, Ga., as well as the Emory Sports Medicine Complex.

 

5. All 68 faculty members in Emory’s department of orthopaedics contributed more than $325,000 to permanently establish the Kelley Society Fund, in Dr. Roberson’s honor.

 

The wife of a former patient of Dr. Roberson’s also announced the creation of the R. Harold Harrison Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery, which will be bestowed upon a professor in Dr. Roberson’s honor.

 

6. The university also commissioned an official portrait of Dr. Roberson.
