Preoperative measurements of fibrinogen concentration can provide additional information about bleeding volumes and transfusion requirements. Researchers studied 82 patients undergoing surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The mean fibrinogen concentration was 3±0.7 g/L.
The researchers reported a mean total of perioperative bleeding volume of 1,552±1,019 milliliters. The total bleeding volume showed a significant correlation with postoperative fibrinogen concentration, but not with platelet count. Bleeders reported lower preoperative fibrinogen plasma concentration.
