Mr. Gay sustained a capsule tear during a February basketball game when his shoulder slipped out of the back, which is a rare occurrence, according to a Memphis Commercial Appeal report. He consulted with team physician Fred Azar, MD, who recommended surgery. He received recommendations from Barry Phillips, MD, and Robert Miller, MD, of the Campbell Clinic, as well as Dr. Andrews, who all recommended surgery, according to a Project Spurs report.

Mr. Gay underwent four weeks of rehabilitation, which failed to heal the injury. Dr. Andrews will perform arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Mr. Gay at an unknown time in the future.
