MCL injuries occur predominantly in young athletic patients participating in sports such as skiing, ice hockey and soccer where knee flexion is present. The researchers, led by Robert LaPrade, MD, recently confirmed that an anatomic medial knee reconstruction technique can restore native stability to an acute or chronic injury.

The new technique requires surgeons to use an autograft tendon to reconstruct the injured ligament by placing it in the exact anatomically correct location. This technique is especially important for surgeons practicing in foreign countries where tissue banks don’t exist. The procedure can also be performed with an allograft.
