12 Statistics on Future Plans of Orthopedic Residents

Most orthopedic residents in postgraduate year three or higher are planning on enrolling in a fellowship, according to a study published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

A total of 498 orthopedic residents completed an online survey and 91 percent of those were planning to enroll in a fellowship, with some indicating more than one subspecialty choice. The top subspecialities included:

•    28 percent sports medicine
•    21 percent arthroplasty
•    14 percent hand surgery
•    12 percent trauma
•    8 percent pediatrics
•    8 percent spine surgery
•    6 percent foot and ankle surgery
•    2 percent oncology

The residents also answered questions about their career priorities after the fellowship. Of the residents who responded, top priorities included:

•    40 percent indicated intellectual as top priorities
•    36 percent indicated educational as top priorities
•    21 percent indicated lifestyle as top priorities
•    4 percent indicated economic as top priorities

The study also found that the projected retirement age of these residents is 64 years old, roughly equal to the previous generation.
