33% of residents view ‘work-life balance’ as hardest challenge

Medscape surveyed more than 1,500 medical residents across more than 25 specialties asking about their lifestyle and happiness.

The “Residents Lifestyle and Happiness Report 2017” included a section on the biggest challenges faced in residency.

 

Here are the residents’ answers:

 

1. Work-life balance — 33 percent

 

2. Dealing with time pressures/demands on time — 19 percent

 

3. Fear of failure or making a serious mistake — 12 percent

 

4. Debt — 11 percent

 

5. Developing the clinical skills required for the specialty — 11 percent

 

6. Dealing with the stress — 8 percent

 

7. Relationship with attending physicians — 2 percent

 

8. Relationship with nurses and/or physician assistants — 1 percent

 

9. Dealing with patient death or treatment of chronically/terminally ill patients — 1 percent

 

10. Other — 2 percent
