Here are five highlights:
1. Dr. Tedros won the most votes of WHO’s 186 member states to earn appointment.
2. He represents the first African to lead the organization.
3. Dr. Tedros will take the place of Dr. Margaret Chan, who will end her 10-year tenure at the end of June.
4. As director general, Dr. Tedros commented he envisions “a world in which everyone can lead healthy and productive lives, regardless of who they are or where they live,” BBC News reports.
5. In his new role, Dr. Tedros said he will focus on universal health coverage; rapid response to disease outbreaks; advancements in the wellbeing of women and children; climate change education; and agency transparency.
