The study involved 134 cancer patients with vertebral compression fractures. The study was sponsored by the Kyphon products division of Medtronic to provide clinical evidence for the benefits of Kyphon balloon kyphoplasty over non-surgical care.
Patients in the surgical group showed statistically significant improvement in functional status as measured by the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire. Seven days after treatment, the surgical patients experienced more improvement in back pain from the baseline compared to the non-surgical patients.
Twenty-six of the 70 patients who underwent surgery experienced adverse events while 19 of the 64 non-surgical patients experienced adverse events.
