Orthopedic surgeons, neurologists ranked among top EHR users — 6 observations

A survey of 10,302 physicians revealed EHR use in 2015, according to EHR Intelligence.

The CDC conducted the survey between August and December 2015.

 

Here are six observations:

 

1. The 2015 National Electronic Health Records Survey found 86.9 percent of office-based physicians utilized an EHR system.

 

2. While 53.9 percent used a basic EHR system, 77.9 percent used a certified EHR system.

 

3. South Dakota ranked first for office-based physician certified EHR use at 90.4 percent, with Massachusetts (89.9 percent), Colorado (89.6 percent), North Carolina (89.4 percent) and Minnesota (88.9 percent) following close behind.

 

4. New Jersey reported the lowest percentage of certified EHR use among office-based physicians at 61.6 percent. Louisiana (69.3 percent), Georgia (69.3 percent), Rhode Island (69 percent), Hawaii (70.8 percent) and Alaska (71.2 percent) also ranked low.

 

5. Primary care physicians reported higher EHR use compared to specialists.

 

6. In terms of specialty, EHR use was as follows:

 

• Cardiovascular: 95.6 percent
• Neurology: 94.5 percent
• Orthopedic surgery: 93.2 percent
• General/family medicine: 92.7 percent
