The cameras were tested during posterior lumbar laminectomy and fusions. One surgeon performed the procedures and video recorded the operation. The researchers found:
1. Google Glass was the most “convenient and lightweight device” during the long operation.
2. The GoPro and Panasonic action cameras supported HD image quality; Google Glass did not. The GoPro had a unique 2.7K or 4K resolution.
3. GoPro had the best quality resolution during the video. The camera could adjust to the point of interest and field of view during surgery as well.
4. The best field of view for sharing the video clip from the GoPro was Narrow FOV.
5. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled users to stream the video and Google Glass has a two-way communication feature within the device.
“Action cameras have the potential to improve patient safety, operator comfort and procedure efficiency in the field of spinal surgery and broadcasting a surgery with development of device and applied program in the future,” concluded the study authors.
