Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Howard An of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush

Howard S. An, MD serves patients at Chicago-based Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. He is Rush University Medical Center’s Morton International Endowed Chair Professor of Orthopedic Surgery as well as director of spine surgery and the spine fellowship program.

Dr. An researches intervertebral disc tissues engineering and spinal biomechanics. He performs cervical spine surgery, scoliosis surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery, among other procedures.

 

Author of more than 280 articles, Dr. An has also written 110 book chapters and 20 books on spine surgery and instrumentation. Dr. An has served on the boards and committees of North American Spine Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, Orthopaedic Research Society and American Orthopaedic Association.

 

After obtaining his medial degree from Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, Dr. An completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution. He completed his spine surgery fellowship at Rothman Institute and Jefferson Medical College, both in Philadelphia.
