Here are seven key points:

1. Dr. Liu noted the outpatient setting saves patients time and money, and doesn’t put them at a greater safety risk compared to the hospital setting.

2. In 2015, about 5,400 ASCs existed, according to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

3. He notes an increasing number of spine surgeries may be safely performed in ASCs, including neck and spine fusion, lower back disc surgery and spinal cord decompression.

4. In the next five years, about 50 percent of spine surgeries are anticipated to be in the outpatient setting, based on a 2014 Global Spine Journal study.

5. Dr. Liu contributes this increasing move to ASCs to advancing technology. Technologies like tubular redaction systems as well as high-powered microscopes and endoscopes are allowing for more outpatient spine surgeries.

6. He notes various benefits of outpatient spine surgery:

  • Small incisions
  • Less bleeding
  • Less pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Less costly
  • Reduced infection risk

7. Dr. Liu completed his minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship at Advanced Orthopedics of South Florida in Hollywood.

“More and more surgeons are learning and improving their proficiency at minimally invasive techniques, and these procedures help patients return to their favorite activities more rapidly than ever,” said Dr. Liu. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
