Here are four observations:
1. The NCAA recently reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that defibrillators should be kept close at hand in weight rooms, basketball courts, ball fields and other high risk locations.
2. An estimated 10 to 20 people suffer from commotio cordis, when a blow to the chest causes a cardiac arrest, every year.
3. Young boys under the age of 15 are most at risk for commotio cordis.
4. The NOCSAE is currently funding a crash-test dummy to study what protective gear works.
