Here are three strategies:

1. The group implemented a “Clinical Redesign” curriculum that standardized MA education. They established baseline standards; used MAs’ help effectively in care delivery; and empowered them as indispensable team members.

2. NSPG gave their MAs new, greater responsibilities. These included agenda setting, medication review and routine screenings.

3. A Medical Assistant Council and Employee Education Assistance Program leveraged more MAs into leadership roles where they could continue developing professionally.

Since implementing these strategies in 2010, NSPG recorded:

•    MA turnover — 14 percent decrease
•    Physician satisfaction scores — 14 percent increase
•    MAs pursuing a national credential — 48 percent increase
