Here are five things to know:
1. Authors who opt for the open access choice retain copyright to their work and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons will make the work freely available online to anyone wishing to access it.
2. AAOS’ board of directors authorized the Open Access option for JAAOS on May 14.
3. JAAOS will offer the open access option to all authors whose work is accepted for publication after June 1, 2016.
4. William N. Levine, MD, of Columbia Orthopedics in New York City, is the editor-in-chief of JAAOS.
5. The AAOS includes more than 39,000 members.
