1. A recent Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University study revealed one-third of Iraq and Afghanistan medical evacuations between 2004 and 2007 were consequences of spinal, musculoskeletal and connective tissue injuries.
2. Medical College of Wisconsin will study neck injuries associated with helmet-mounted equipment.
3. The grant will also fund research on loading work’s effect on cervical spine artificial discs.
4. Researchers will examine spinal injury threshold disparities between men and women.
5. The study will assess advanced measurement technology use to measure military brain injuries.
6. Neurosurgery professor Narayan Yoganandan, PhD, and Chief of Research and neurosurgery professor Frank A. Pintar, PhD, will head the study.
