Born with spina bifida, Dr. Karin Muraszko uses experiences to connect with patients: 5 points

Neurosurgeon Karin Muraszko, MD, chair of neurosurgery at University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, was born with spine bifida, according to CNN.

1. Dr. Muraszko had to learn to walk three times in her life and has worn a leg brace most of her life.

2. She recently required another surgery for her condition, and is now in a wheelchair.

 

3. She builds off her experiences as a neurological patient to treat her patients, truly understanding their struggles.

4. University of Michigan appointed her neurosurgery chair of 2005.

5. Dr. Muraszko earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
