Researchers find variability in spine radiosurgery treatment planning: 5 things to know

Researchers sought to determine the variability in spinal radiosurgery planning practices among five international institutions, according to BioMed Central.

The study involved five patient cases including medical history as well as CT and MR imaging. Researchers compared planning steps of CT-MR image registration, GTV definition, CTV definition, PTV definition and SRS treatment planning.

 

Radiation Oncology published the study.

 

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The study discovered image registration variability ranged between translational 1.1 mm and 2.4 mm as well as rotational 1.1 degrees and 2 degrees in all three directions.

 

2. GTV delineation variability was 0.8 mm in axial and 1.2 mm in longitudinal direction.

 

3. CTV margins to PTV margins differed between 0 mm and 2 mm.

 

4. Delineation variability proved to be 1 mm in axial directions for the spinal cord.

 

5. The researchers concluded spine radiosurgery variability exists in academic centers. They call for established delineation and planning criteria, as it could impact outcomes.
