3 insights on the FDA’s new policy on blackbox labels

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf pushed forth a new policy mandating drug companies to include blackbox labels on more than 100 types of painkillers, according to The Hill.

1. The requirement seeks to warn both providers and patients about the link between painkillers and overdoses.

 

2. The new policy requires painkillers like oxycodone to have labels warning of “misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose and death.”

 

3. Commissioner Califf said the policy isn’t only targeting drug companies, but providers who may prescribe more opioids than they should.
