Perry Initiative brings orthopedics to Utah high school girls: 5 notes

The Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Perry Outreach Initiative allowed 20 Judge Memorial Catholic High School girls to experience the orthopedics and engineering industries on Feb. 6, according to Intermountain Catholic.

Here are five notes:

 

1. The students experienced six hands-on mock surgical exercises, with help from local female surgeons.  

 

2. Orthopedic surgeons Kristen Carroll, MD, and Angela Wang, MD, led the workshop.

 

3. The program’s topics focused on mentoring, teamwork and support needed in the medical field.

 

4. The students drilled and sawed real bones during the exercises.

 

5. The program also exposed the students to the intertwining fields of engineering and medicine.
