Here are five observations:

1. The genetic diseases are called neurocutaneous disorders, and involve disorders like neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex.

2. The abnormal development of embryonic cells causes the neurocutaneous disorders, which result in tumors along the skin, organ, bones, brain and spinal cord.

3. People either inherit these disorders or develop them from random mutations.

4. No cures exist for neurocutaneous disorders, but treatments are advancing.

5. Loyola Medicine brings together geneticists, otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, neurological surgeons, neurologists and ophthalmologists to address these disorders.
