Case Western researchers devise new methods to reduce spinal cord lesion damage: 4 highlights

Cleveland-based Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine researchers found a method that can limit damage from spinal cord lesion, according to the Observer.

Here are four highlights:

 

1. In December, medical researchers received a $2.4 million federal grant to study the use of high-voltage electrical stimulation of the spinal cord to reduce chronic pain.

 

2. Researchers found multipotent adult progenitor cells, a special type of stem cell, can direct a more specific, less damaging immune response to spare much of the healthy tissue that macrophages would otherwise destroy.

 

3. Preliminary tests with MAPCs in lab animals have yielded promising results.

 

4. Jerry Silver, PhD, neuroscience professor at Case Western, led the study.
