Here are four key points:
1. Chronic back pain affects approximately 100 million Americans, and it is estimated that 26 percent of the population will suffer back pain at some point in their lives.
2. Implanted analgesic devices are available, the most common of which are implanted drug infusion pumps and electronic nerve stimulation devices/generators. Spinal cord stimulation has been reported to be superior to both conservative medical management and re-operation when dealing with recurrent pain from failed back surgery syndrome.
3. SCS hardware consists of an electrode lead, a pulse generator and an external programmer. The percutaneous electrode can be inserted via an epidural needle, and is ideal for both trial and permanent implants. Placement of the paddle lead requires open surgery, but offers the advantages of greater stability and less propensity to migrate.
4. SCS is particularly effective for relieving neuropathic pain. The most common indications include FBSS with radicular pain, CRPS, peripheral neuropathy, phantom limb pain, angina and ischemic limb pain.
