Dr. James Andrews uses stem cell treatment during running back Jamaal Charles’ ACL surgery: 5 things to know

In October, James Andrews, MD, performed knee surgery on Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, and the surgery involved a stem-cell treatment, according to a report by The Wichita Eagle.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Andrews repaired the torn anterior cruciate ligament in Mr. Charles’ right knee.

 

2. Stem cells were injected during the ligament repair surgery and once again six weeks later.

 

3. Dr. Andrews is a prominent sports medicine physician and the founding member of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Institute in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

 

4. He is a senior consultant for the Washington Redskins and the orthopedic medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays.

 

5. He has used stem cell treatments during sports injury procedures in the past. Most notably, Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson has undergone stem cell treatment under Dr. Andrews’ supervision.
