Here are five things to know:
1. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery hosted “The National Obesity Summit on the Provision of Care for the Obese Patient.”
2. Representative from several of our nation’s leading medical organizations including The American Diabetes Association, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Medical Association attended the summit.
3. Various specialists in fields including obesity medicine, bariatric surgery, orthopedics, diabetes, heart disease and countless others collaborated on prevention and treatment strategies for obesity. Specialists also discussed patient access to treatment, care coordination and how to increase patient efficacy.
4. The American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association issued a joint scientific statement on cardiovascular disease in adults with type 2 diabetes. The statement featured discussions and recommendations on bariatric and metabolic surgery, blood pressure and blood glucose control, cholesterol management, aspirin therapy and weight management.
5. The American Society of Clinical Oncology is focusing more on obesity treatment and the organization advocates for more education, research and advocacy to mitigate the effects of obesity. Jennifer Ligibel, MD, leader of the ASCO Emergency Balance Working Group, said, “Over the next 20 years, obesity is likely to be the most preventable cause of cancer.”
