Here are five key notes on the technology:

1. The drill is designed to eliminate the need for drilling the pedicle with a probe. It combines the drilling and tapping into one step to reduce the procedure time and minimize cortical wall breaches or procedure compromise.

2. The drill is used with minimally invasive and percutaneous spinal procedures and allows the surgeon to use their favorite implant system.

3. The first procedure using the technology took place at Lille’s Centre Hospitalier Universitaire by Dr. Assaker, Dr. Chopin and Dr. Allaouri. The procedure was for deformity correction — a thoracolumbar scoliosis correction.

4. SpineGuard is focused on disposable medical devices to make spine surgery safer.

5. The product was developed after a close collaboration between the research and development team and expert consulting surgeons.

“As a long-standing user of PediGuard probes, I find that this smart threaded drill is a useful technical improvement,” said Richard Assaker, MD, professor of neurosurgery at Centre Hospitalier Universair Lille in France. “It allows us to prepare the entry point, redirect the trajectory when needed and remain in cancellous bone. If appropriate, we can also cross the cortical wall with a very high level of precision.”
